As children, our developing system’s learn to perceive the world and to relate to others based on our earliest experiences…
If our early experiences include safe connection, space for exploration, repair, and consistent enough attunement, then our system may learn more easily how to move in and out of stressors as we grow
As adults, our nervous system might be more likely to orient towards presence, connection and more easily be able to take in the “good” in life…
On the contrary, if our early experiences involved neglect, abuse, conflict or even just a lack of attunement or availability from our caregivers, our system may then become wired to expect big surges of activation or constantly staying in hyper-arousal or hypo-arousal, feeling consistently “on edge”, anxious or really comfortable and unsure in truly safe dynamics…
When we begin working with our body and healing through the lens of our nervous system, we will almost always be connected back to our early life and our inner child. We will often have feelings or sensations or experiences that feel young, vulnerable and familiar to our child self.
In these early years our system is developing and learning what is safe and unsafe, building belief systems about ourselves and narratives about the world around us. So it makes sense that when we connect with our body, we too connect with these younger parts.
